It's that time of year again! Father's Day is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with some old-fashioned quality father-and-son bonding? Well, we say "quality" but actually, the real joy of this holiday lies in its versatility.

Whether you want to go all out and get Dad a fancy new tie or just hang out in his garage while he fixes your car (believe me, I've done both), there are plenty of ways to spend quality time with dad on this special day.

Plan a fun night out with Dad

  • Plan a fun night out with Dad.

  • Have a nice dinner at one of the best restaurants in town, and enjoy an after-dinner drink while you watch the sunset over the water. Or go out for drinks instead (or both!).

  • Go see a movie on Father's Day weekend--your dad is bound to have some suggestions for what he wants to see! If he doesn't, then maybe check out his favorite actor's latest project or find something new that looks like it might be up his alley.

  • Hit up your favorite park or beach as part of your day together, whether it's walking along the boardwalk or hiking through one of those gorgeous national parks nearby...or even just taking advantage of all those beautiful public spaces we have here in Hampton Roads and spending some time outside together at one of our many parks--there are so many options!

Remember that even though this holiday only comes once per year (and sometimes not even then), there are plenty more opportunities throughout 2019 where both parents could take turns planning activities like these so everyone gets their fair share of quality time together without worrying too much about logistics; it'll be great practice before next year arrives too!

Go on a hike in the woods

You've probably heard of hiking before, but what exactly is it? Well, in short, it's just walking through the woods. There aren't any cars or other people around and you can take your time to admire nature's beauty as you walk along.

It may not sound like much fun at first glance--and trust me: I was skeptical myself when my dad first suggested going on one together--but if you look at it from another perspective, there are several reasons why hiking with your dad is an excellent idea:

  • You'll get some fresh air and exercise! This helps keep both of your bodies healthy so that neither one has to worry about getting sick later down the road (which would be bad news for everyone involved).

  • You get to bond over something new together! It doesn't matter what kind of relationship exists between two people; every pair needs something unique that brings them closer together than before because otherwise it becomes harder over time rather than easier (at least until they learn how).

Have a game night with Dad

You can start by asking your father what games he likes to play. If you are lucky enough to be in possession of the board game "Clue," it might be fun to break out the old murder mystery. If not, try something new! There is no better time than Father's Day to try out a new game together and see what happens.

Finally, why should we spend time with our fathers? Because they deserve it! They work hard every day so that we can live comfortable lives; why not give them something back in return?

Get some work done around the house to surprise Dad later on

If your dad is anything like mine, he's always looking for something to do. He'll be happy to help you with any project you have in mind, but only if he knows about it beforehand. If you can't get him on board with this idea, then go ahead and do it yourself! Just make sure that when he walks into the room later on and sees what you've done (and how much work was involved), he doesn't know that it was supposed to be a surprise.

This will ensure maximum impact when he sees his new furniture or freshly painted walls--and if all goes according your plan perfectly well, Dad will never know how much effort went into making things perfect just for him!

Tell Dad how much you love him

It's a no-brainer, but it bears repeating: tell Dad how much you love him this Father's Day. Tell him why and make sure he knows that he means the world to you, because he does! If your relationship with your father has been strained at times over the years (and who hasn't?), take this opportunity to heal old wounds by telling him what makes him so special to you now--and maybe even thanking him for all the sacrifices he made when raising his kids from birth until adulthood.

Have a great Father's Day!

Be kind to people, be kind to yourself, and be kind to the environment.

Also: be kind to animals, your family and friends (especially those who are also dads), and anyone else who needs it.

Conclusion

We hope these ideas have helped you plan your own special Father's Day. Remember, it's not just about the gifts and the food--it's also about spending time with your dad and letting him know how much he means to you.
